How to Use This Tax Refund Estimator

  1. Choose your tax year and filing status.
  2. Enter your income (wages, 1099s, capital gains, interest, etc.).
  3. Add any adjustments (IRA contributions, student loan interest, etc.).
  4. Choose whether you want to use the standard deduction or enter itemized deductions (mortgage interest, real estate tax, charity, car loan interest, etc.).
  5. Enter your children, child & dependent care expenses, and other credits.
  6. Add your federal and state tax withheld from your W-2s/1099s and select your state.
  7. Click “Estimate My Refund” to see an approximate refund or balance due.

What This Estimator Looks At

  • Wages and self-employment income.
  • Short-term & long-term capital gains (simplified), 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, and taxable government income.
  • Adjustments to income, including IRA contributions and student loan interest (capped at $2,500).
  • Standard or itemized deductions: real estate tax, mortgage interest, charitable donations, car loan interest (capped at $10,000), and other itemized deductions.
  • Child tax credit (including a simplified refundable Additional Child Tax Credit estimate).
  • Child & dependent care credit (up to $3,000 per person, $6,000 total, at an approximate 20% rate).
  • Rough state income tax calculation based on your taxable income and state.
